Nino Farina, the first Formula 1 motor racing world champion, was born on the day his father established his automotive carrozzeria in Turin. Born in the early years of a century obsessed with the automobile, Farina was inspired by Italian racing great Tazio Nuvolari and competed in local races. His uncompromising style and skill, combined with opportunities offered by his family’s connections and the tutelage of Nuvolari, made him one of the best up-and-coming drivers not only in Italy but in the whole world.

Nino’s career took off in his late 20s, as he served in the Italian cavalry and earned a doctorate in law. He competed in various Alfa Romeos, competing throughout Italy and Europe and winning the 1940 Grand Prix of Tripoli. After World War II, racing resumed for six years, and in 1946, Farina returned to the racetrack, driving the 1.5-litre, 8-cylinder Alfa Romeo 158.

Despite the dangerous times of the time, Farina’s natural talent and fearlessness began to yield results. His commitment to racing was met with mixed opinions, but all agreed that if Farina was competing, others would need to perform at their very best to even get close to racing with him.

It wasn’t until 1950 that an official motor racing world championship was organized. Farina won the first ever World Championship race at Silverstone, took first again in Switzerland, and was crowned as the first Campione Del Mondo. He continued to race for years after, pushing Fangio and Alberto Ascari as hard as any driver. However, his reserved nature and reluctance to be photographed ended his extraordinary life when he lost control of his Lotus Cortina while driving over the Alps to attend the 1966 French F1 Grand Prix.
